Burke looks at potential acquisitions

Ducks General Manager Brian Burke has often said that he doesn’t do much dealing at the annual NHL trade deadline.

Although Burke has made deadline-day deals in each of his two previous seasons with the team, they have largely been second-tier moves. The only addition he made for last season’s run to the Stanley Cup was acquiring rugged winger Brad May from Colorado in exchange for goalie Michael Wall.

But that could change if the Ducks, as many have speculated, continue their pursuit of such targets as Kings defenseman Rob Blake, Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin or Atlanta Thrashers winger Marian Hossa if they become available.

Burke, who is attending the general managers’ meetings in Naples, Fla., wouldn’t comment on any potential deals, but he didn’t deny that he wouldn’t mind adding a big fish to his well-stocked roster.

“What we are doing is trying to find out what the price tag is on certain guys,” Burke said. “We may do nothing at all. But we have the cap space to go big if that becomes available.”

Sundin, Toronto’s all-time leading scorer, has insisted that he won’t waive his no-trade clause as next week’s NHL deadline approaches, but that hasn’t stopped speculation that he may do so in order to join a title contender.

The Ducks could be a destination as second-line center Doug Weight is injured and Sundin, who turned 37 on Feb. 13, could fit on a line with Teemu Selanne and Chris Kunitz. The team would be responsible for about $1.1 million of Sundin’s $5.5-million salary.

Sundin’s agent, J.P. Barry, did not respond to a phone message.

What could likely keep the Ducks from making a major move is the first-round pick they got from Edmonton when they didn’t match the Oilers’ offer sheet for Dustin Penner. The Oilers are tied with Toronto for the third-fewest points in the league and Burke has said he wouldn’t trade away the pick if it winds up among the top seven of what’s expected to be a deep 2008 draft.

To get Sundin, the Ducks would likely have to part with at least that pick along with a top prospect or two.

“I don’t think there’ll be fewer deals,” he said, speaking generally about Tuesday’s deadline. “You’re going to have 16 to 19 teams trying to add parts.”

Even though the Ducks have made defense a priority, they are believed to be interested in adding Blake, who told The Times on Sunday that he doesn’t want to waive the no-trade clause in his contract with the Kings amid reports that he’d consider doing so if he were moved to the Ducks or San Jose.

Burke said he believes he has a better team at this time than the one that won the Cup but that it hasn’t played with the same consistency.
