Senate GOP picks new leader

State Senate Republicans on Wednesday chose Sen. Dave Cogdill of Modesto as the chamber’s new minority leader. He will take over the post April 15 from Sen. Dick Ackerman of Irvine, who is prevented by term limits from running for reelection.
Cogdill, 57, said he would maintain the caucus’ opposition to tax increases to deal with a potential $16-billion budget gap.
“We’ve got a strongly committed caucus that believes very strongly that this state is headed in the wrong direction in a lot of areas as it relates to our budget,” Cogdill said.
He said the Republicans have to do a better job of communicating their alternative proposals -- that the message has been “wonkish.”
Cogdill was elected to the Senate in 2006 after serving six years in the Assembly. He was a real estate appraiser before he joined the Legislature.
