Californians who want to vote by mail in the Feb. 5 election may start requesting their ballots and voting Monday, according to state election officials.

The last day to request a vote-by-mail ballot is Jan. 29.

Secretary of State Debra Bowen said the number of absentee voters has been increasing during the last decade. In November 2006, the last statewide election, 41.5% of those who cast ballots voted by mail. Only 24% did so in the November 2000 election.

Absentee voters must submit their ballots to election officials by the 8 p.m. close of the polls on election day, Bowen said.
