Memphis cruises past Pepperdine

Doneal Mack made seven three-point baskets and scored a career-high 23 points, leading No. 2-ranked Memphis past Pepperdine, 90-53, Saturday for a school-record 40th consecutive home win.

Mack’s seven three-pointers tied a team record held by six others. Five players scored in double figures for the Tigers (13-0), who have not lost a home game since a 69-58 setback to Texas on Jan. 2, 2006.

Tyrone Shelley had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Waves (5-10). Malcolm Thomas, Pepperdine’s second-leading scorer at 15 points per game, was limited to 10.

Memphis held Pepperdine to 15 points over 15 minutes spanning the halves.

The Tigers were up by 23 points and extended the lead to 38 on the way to sending the Waves to their sixth loss in seven games. For Pepperdine, like other teams, it was a matter of trying to stop the Tigers’ inside game and penetration or guard their shooters on the perimeter.

“When they get on a roll, they know it,” Pepperdine Coach Vance Walberg said. “They knock those shots down, and they’re going to be national champs.”

Cal State Northridge 88, UC Santa Barbara 84 -- Deon Tresvant made seven three-pointers and scored 23 of his career-high 31 points in the second half to rally the visiting Matadors.

Northridge (10-3, 2-0 Big West Conference) shot 68% in the second half and erased a 12-point deficit in the last 11 minutes 35 seconds.

Alex Harris, who led the Gauchos (12-3, 1-1) with 25 points, scored on a running shot for a 66-54 lead with 11:35 to go.

But a three-pointer by Rob Haynes spurred the Matadors’ comeback.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 64, Long Beach State 52 -- Lorenzo Keeler scored 14 points to help the host Mustangs (6-8, 1-1 Big West) end a three-game skid.

Dawin Whiten and Chaz Thomas each had 11 points, and Titus Shelton scored 10 for the Mustangs.

Donovan Morris had 15 points and Greg Plater had 12 for the 49ers (3-10, 0-2), who have lost four games in a row.
