Heigl’s actions

RE “Pretty Outspoken” [Jan. 6]: Let me get this straight.

Isaiah Washington defends himself at the Golden Globes after being blindsided by a reporter, and he’s called all sorts of names except outspoken. In fact, he loses his job and is relegated to the abysmal “Bionic Woman.”

Katherine Heigl -- whose accomplishments include modeling, being a big-breasted blond, a couple of doe-eyed crying scenes on “Grey’s Anatomy” masquerading as real acting -- feels the need to defend a grown man (T.R. Knight), and tells Isaiah that “he needs to just not speak in public,” but she’s deemed “pretty outspoken.”

In a town where we heap praise upon the beautiful, and the PC-police have turned the truly outspoken into pariahs, Mr. Paul Brownfield’s fluff was part and parcel. He can continue to worship Ms. Heigl, but I’m not impressed.

WE are grateful for Paul Brownfield’s offhanded observation that Katherine Heigl was smoking as she drank coffee outside of the Four Seasons at the start of his front-page Calendar profile. This is exactly the type of under-the-radar depiction that keeps up the image of cigarettes as being very “Hollywood,” particularly by a wholesome, rising TV and movie star. We appreciate his cooperation in maintaining smoking as glamorous.

His check is in the mail. Just one small request: Next time, can he please specify the brand?

Always indebted, the American Tobacco Companies.
