A contract Orange County employee who worked with welfare recipients was arrested Wednesday for allegedly stealing more than $300,000 from the county, authorities said.

Elizabeth Gonzalez, 32, of Moreno Valley was charged with 249 felony counts of fraud. She is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.

If convicted, authorities said, she could face up to 170 years in state prison.

Gonzalez is accused of writing fraudulent checks with taxpayer funds to pay the rent of people on welfare while pocketing money they had given her to pay their landlords.
