A helicopter crashed on the southbound Harbor Freeway in South Los Angeles just before 11 p.m. on Friday, killing its sole occupant and halting traffic for miles, authorities said.

The aircraft slammed into the 110 Freeway near Century Boulevard, according to Ron Myers of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Firefighters who responded found a small, single- or double-engine helicopter burning and extinguished the flames.

“Unfortunately, we found one person deceased aboard the fuselage,” Myers said. “At this time it’s unclear what caused the crash.”

Myers said the Federal Aviation Administration and California Highway Patrol would investigate the cause of the accident.

The Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the aircraft was not theirs.
