The Milwaukee Brewers put right-hander Jeff Suppan on the 15-day disabled list Monday because of joint irritation in his pitching elbow, temporarily making room on the roster for new acquisition CC Sabathia.

Suppan said he injured his elbow during an at-bat in his start at Washington on May 23, and it wasn’t getting any better as he tried to pitch through the injury. Suppan said he wasn’t sure whether the injury was affecting his pitching.

“It’s hard to say,” Suppan said. “I don’t really know. All I really know is it wasn’t getting any better.”

Because of the All-Star break next week, Suppan could return to Milwaukee’s roster after sitting out only one start and still get the rest he needs.

“I want him healthy,” Manager Ned Yost said. “I want him strong for August and September.”

A tumultuous week for Alex Rodriguez, played out in tabloid headlines and carried on the whispers of a connection to Madonna, came to a head when his wife filed for divorce in Miami.

The more than five-year marriage collapsed amid reports of a new friendship between the New York Yankees slugger and the 49-year-old pop singer, an only-in-New York convergence of sport and entertainment celebrity.

Played out in the sports pages and gossip magazines, the saga appeared to have taken its toll on Cynthia Rodriguez, who said in divorce papers that her husband “emotionally abandoned his wife and children.”

“The marriage of the parties is irretrievably broken because of the husband’s extramarital affairs and other marital misconduct,” according to her petition for dissolution of marriage, filed in the family division of Miami-Dade County Circuit Court.

Rodriguez’s attorney in Miami, Ira M. Elegant, said he had not reviewed the divorce petition but added, “As you know, anyone can pay the filing fee and make allegations.”

Manager Terry Francona said the team was preparing to recall Clay Buchholz, who will take Masterson’s rotation spot.
