Re “Narrow road is a zone of conflict,” July 9

Your fascinating article on “road rage” in Mandeville Canyon gives reasons for reflection as increasing numbers of bicycles and cars compete for limited road space. As a bicyclist and an auto driver, I see discourteous and dangerous practices in both groups.

Bicyclists can even be more courteous to each other. For instance, it is difficult for the bicyclist to hear passing bicycles (or hybrid cars) approaching from the rear. My heavy, slow mountain bike is passed by racing bikes. In no more than a tenth of such passings does the cyclist give me the accident-reducing warning: “Passing on your left.”

We need to think about how bicyclists and auto drivers can reduce risks on our ever more congested roads.
