What’s ‘surf god’ in French?

Times Staff Writer

Oxbow, the French surf wear brand that has been a staple of European wave riders for 23 years, is finally opening a stateside shop. But the bigger draw may be Laird Hamilton, the chiseled pro surfer who will be on hand today to christen the beachside space and sign surfing DVDs. The shop carries everything you need for a successful day on the surf or turf, from stylishly patterned black-and-white wet- suits to linen sundresses with frilly skirts.

And if we’re lucky, Hamilton will be wearing one of the store’s many pairs of Euro-style swimming briefs.

131 Broadway, Santa Monica. (310) 395-5220. 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Laird Hamilton ap- pearance from 2 to 4 p.m. today. www.oxboworld.com
