Nadal sweeps to Toronto title

Second-seeded Rafael Nadal won his fifth consecutive tournament title, sweeping past unseeded Nicolas Kiefer, 6-3, 6-2, Sunday in the Rogers Cup final at Toronto.

The Spaniard has won 29 consecutive matches and seven tournaments -- including the French Open and Wimbledon -- this year. This was his first title on a hard court this season.

“I win on every surface, no? I win on grass, on hard, on indoor, and on clay too,” Nadal said. “So if I am playing my best tennis I can win on every surface, no?”

Chad Johnson reports to Bengals camp

Carrying a pillow under one arm and an Xbox in hand, wide receiver Chad Johnson walked past reporters without responding to questions as he reported to the Cincinnati Bengals training camp. Johnson’s camp appearance ended an off-season drama in which he had attempted to have the Bengals trade him.

Kick returner Devin Hester, who had skipped the first two days of training camp because he wanted to renegotiate his contract, has signed a four-year contract extension, reportedly worth up to $40 million, with the Chicago Bears. His previous contract, which had two years left, had been $445,000 for the 2008 season.

Pittsburgh Steelers nose tackle Casey Hampton, listed at 325 pounds but apparently much heavier, was put on the physically unable to perform list after reporting to training camp overweight and failing to complete the team’s annual run test.

After having an MRI exam, Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel was listed as day to day because of a mild hamstring strain.

Philadelphia wins ArenaBowl, 59-56

Matt D’Orazio threw seven touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead the Philadelphia Soul to their first ArenaBowl victory, beating defending AFL champion San Jose, 59-56, at New Orleans.

Philadelphia scored on all six of its first-half possessions and took the lead for good with three consecutive touchdowns in the second quarter, then held off a frantic San Jose rally in the final minute to prevail in the 22nd ArenaBowl.

Francisco Javier Fernandez set a world record in the 10,000-meter race walk, with a time of 37 minutes 53.09 seconds at the Spanish nationals at Santa Cruz De Tenerife, Canary Islands. Fernandez beat the record set by Italy’s Ivano Brugnetti at the 2004 Olympics in Athens by five seconds.

Stretch-running Street Boss reasserted his status as the West’s best sprinter with a come-from-behind victory in the Grade I $300,000 Bing Crosby Handicap at Del Mar. With a Del Mar record carryover of $1,561,987, an additional $3,615,779 was bet on the pick six, and there were 59 winning tickets, each worth $60,499.40.

Fletcher Thornton resigned from USA Judo’s board of directors amid accusations that nearly 30 years ago he molested teenage competitors he coached. The resignation took effect Friday, a day before a New York Times report about the allegations.

Brazil won its third consecutive Beach Soccer World Cup title, defeating Italy, 5-3, behind two goals apiece from Bruno and Sidney at Marseille, France.

James Stewart earned his ninth AMA Toyota Motocross Championship race victory of the season, leading every lap of both motos at Washougal, Wash., in the Motosport.com National.

Tony Schumacher completed a sweep of the three-race western swing of NHRA season, winning the top-fuel competition at the Fram-Autolite NHRA Nationals at Sonoma, Calif. Schumacher’s 3.886-second run at a top speed of 307.93 mph in his U.S. Army dragster defeated Hillary Will’s 3.988 at 306.19 in the final.
