Philadelphia 8, at Washington 5: Chase Utley homered for the second consecutive game as the Phillies won their fourth in a row to move back atop the NL East.

at Florida 7, New York 5: Josh Johnson, who had reconstructive elbow surgery in August 2007, got his first victory in almost two years. Mike Pelfrey lost for the first time in his last eight decisions, as the Mets were knocked out of first place in the East.

St. Louis 7, at Atlanta 2: The Cardinals’ Chris Carpenter pitched four solid innings in his first start since April 2007. The 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner spent the last year recovering from ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow. Casey Kotchman went 0 for 5 in his first game for the Braves.

Cincinnati 9, at Houston 5: The Reds ended an eight-game skid as Adam Dunn homered twice and Ken Griffey Jr. added a three-run shot, No. 608 of his career.

Arizona 7, at San Diego 3: Dan Haren (11-5) won his third consecutive start. Chad Tracy and Mark Reynolds each drove in two runs for the Diamondbacks.

at Dodgers 4, San Francisco 0: Chad Billingsley pitched a five-hitter for his first shutout.
