For the kids

Friday’s Scully-Wooden Classic was magnificent. Two of the great legends of the 20th/21st centuries on the same stage at the same time, waxing poetic about love, sacrifice, longevity, loyalty and, most poignantly, life’s evanescence.

The only downer was the fact that irreverent moderator T.J. Simers inserted himself too much into the conversation. Only once during the evening were “The Coach” and “The Voice” allowed to directly dialogue with each other (late in the program when Coach Wooden quipped to Vinny about the irrepressible Casey Stengel). I would have loved to have seen more of that.

Just came home with my family after an evening I will cherish. To hear the words from Vin Scully and John Wooden reminds us once again how fortunate we are to have two such individuals who represent the City of Los Angeles. They are treasures of this city and demonstrated the love, integrity, commitment and passion that we should all strive for in our day-to-day lives.

Though I have never met them, they have been a part of my entire life. How blessed we are to feel a part of these two individuals, and how fortunate we are that they would allow us to be part of them.

I attended the Wooden & Scully event with my two children who attended UCLA and have been Dodgers fans since before they could walk. T.J. did a great job on a wonderful evening. I have decided not to cancel my subscription to The Times.

Was it only me, or did everyone who attended Wooden and Scully for the Kids put just a little more thought into how they pulled up their socks and tied their shoes this past week?
