The tip

Daylight-saving time: We lost an hour Sunday, and it’s going to stay lost for the next eight months (we revert to Standard Time on Nov. 2). It’s a good time to change sprinkler times to earlier and later, to avoid the heat of the day. Experts also suggest checking batteries in smoke detectors and assessing the roof damage from this year’s rains. Commuters should be prepared to head home from work in possibly blinding sunlight -- starting this week, sunset will occur at 7 p.m. or later.

Here’s a highlight from The Homeroom, The Times’ education blog.

Friday officially inaugurated my “summer” break. The year-round schedule is a strange beast, and taking a break during March and much of April will be the sole opportunity to rest until September. As it’s been pointed out on this blog, this is technically an unpaid vacation. In any case, I will spend much of the time in meetings, planning sessions and ad hoc student conferences. I will spend weeks rigorously planning curriculum and working on a master schedule for the new school year (we start at the beginning of July). Will I be slamming the snooze button at 5:40 every morning? Not right now, but for most of us on break, it’s not the leisurely stretch of time that many people envision.

Ask a reporter

How serious is the spike in homicides this year in L.A.?

Homicides are up roughly 27% this year, compared with the same period in 2007. But it’s important to put the killings in perspective. In 1992, L.A. recorded 1,083 homicides. In 2003, that number had dropped to 517. Last year, there were 392 homicides, the lowest number since 1970.
