Measure’s foes raise $6.4 million

Share

Opponents of a measure on the June 3 ballot that would restrict the use of eminent domain and phase out rent control have raised about $6.4 million so far -- nearly twice what supporters of the initiative have brought in. Supporters of Proposition 98, including Jon Coupal of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Assn., have raised $3.2 million.

They complained that most of the money raised by opponents came from the California League of Cities and California State Assn. of Counties without sufficient disclosures.

Opponents of the measure note that more than 65% of the money raised in support of Proposition 98 has come from firms that own mobile home parks and rental apartments. The measure would remove rent control from such units once current occupants vacate.
