Drawing near to the finish line

Joel Pett is the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist of the Lexington Herald-Leader. His work also appears in USA Today.

As the clock winds down on ’08 campaign caricature (un-American- Muslim-terrorist-sympathizing socialist! Desperately-clueless-temperamental-bomb-bomb-bombing Dubya-double!), you may be relieved, but cartoonists are ticked, not looking forward to the down time. Dana Summers pictures eleventh-hour hustings-hustling in hanging-chad country. Fellow Floridian Chan Lowe peeks ahead a few days and spoils it for the victor. And for Mike Peters’ time-traveling second in command, the next election calendar can’t come soon enough. So fast-forward to 2012 ... political cartoonists will be counting the minutes.
