Insulin syringes are mislabeled

Covidien Ltd. is recalling 471,000 disposable insulin syringes because of mislabeling that could cause patients to receive an overdose, U.S. regulators said.

The ReliOn hypodermic syringes could cause patients to get as much as 2 1/2 times the intended dose, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The syringes were sold on Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s website and in Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores between Aug. 1 and Oct. 8.

Sherwin-Williams Co., the biggest U.S. paint retailer, recalled 75,000 cans of spray-on fabric protector after a customer was overcome by fumes and hospitalized. Sherwin-Williams is voluntarily asking customers to stop using Krylon Outdoor Spaces UV Fabric Protector, which “can pose a serious respiratory hazard,” the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement. The 11-ounce aerosol cans, which retailed for about $7, should be returned to stores for a full refund, the commission said. The fabric protector was sold at Wal-Mart, Ace Hardware and other U.S. stores since January 2006.

Nestle recalled Farinha Lactea cereal in the U.S. because the product may contain traces of a pesticide that is not approved for use on wheat in the country. Most sales of the cereal take place in Portuguese-speaking communities in the U.S. The cereal is made by the Farinha Lactea unit in Brazil, where the pesticide is approved, the food company said. Levels of the pesticide found were below Brazilian limits. The U.S. permits use of the pesticide on grain crops other than wheat, according to Nestle, which said it had received no reports of illnesses related to the cereal.

Everlasting Distributors Inc. is recalling all of its 3.88-ounce packages of Fresh and Crispy Jacobina biscuits because the product might be contaminated with melamine, an industrial chemical. The product was distributed nationwide in Asian grocery stores. Information: (201) 823-0800.
