Re “Pollution saps state’s economy, study says,” Nov. 13

A shocking statistic mentioned in this article is that 3,000 deaths annually in California are attributable to smog pollution. For comparison, according to the American Lung Assn., the number of lung-cancer deaths attributable to second-hand cigarette smoke for the entire United States is 3,400 annually.

While protecting nonsmokers should continue to be a priority, it seems that a greater focus on banning low-efficiency autos merits serious discussion and action.
