Turnesa and Kuchar tied at 18 under in Las Vegas

PGA Tour rookie Marc Turnesa holed out from 159 yards for eagle on the par-four 18th hole to offset a 17th-hole double bogey and maintain a share of the lead Friday after the second round of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at Las Vegas.

Turnesa followed his opening 62 with a 64 to match Matt Kuchar at 18-under 126 -- one off the PGA Tour’s 36-hole records for total score and relation to par. Kuchar had his second straight 63 at TPC Summerlin.

Zach Johnson, who won the Texas Open last week, was third at 17 under after a 65.

Brittany Lang shot a one-under 71 for a share of the second-round lead with Suzann Pettersen in the inaugural Kapalua LPGA Classic in Hawaii.

Annika Sorenstam followed her opening 77 with a 70 to make it to the weekend.

Andy Bean hit all 18 greens in regulation and finished with a seven-under 65 to take the first-round lead at the Champions Tour’s Administaff Small Business Classic at the Woodlands Country Club in Texas.

Venus advances at Zurich Open

Venus Williams beat Francesca Schiavone, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the Zurich Open in Switzerland.

Williams, seeded third, won this tournament in 1999. She next faces second-seeded Ana Ivanovic, who defeated Petra Kvitova, 6-1, 6-4.

Flavia Pennetta and Anabel Medina Garrigues also advanced and will meet in the semifinals today.

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer stayed on track to meet in another final by winning their quarterfinals in straight sets at the Madrid Masters.

Top-ranked Nadal downed Feliciano Lopez, 6-4, 6-4, and second-ranked Federer eliminated ninth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro, 6-3, 6-3.

In today’s semifinals, Nadal will meet Gilles Simon, who outlasted Ivo Karlovic, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 7-6 (2). Federer will face fourth-seeded Andy Murray in a replay of the U.S. Open final. Murray beat Gael Monfils, 6-2, 6-2.

Kings’ Greene signs extension

Defenseman Matt Greene has signed a five-year extension with the Kings through the 2013-14 season.

Greene, 25, is in his first season with the Kings after spending three years with Edmonton.

Columbus Blue Jackets center Michael Peca’s suspension for making contact with an official was cut to five games by the NHL. It was originally ruled a Category II penalty, which requires a 10-game suspension.

Steve Yzerman will be appointed executive director of Canada’s hockey team for the 2010 Vancouver Games.

Boras wins decision against Sheffield

Scott Boras won a $550,000 decision against Gary Sheffield of the Detroit Tigers when an arbitrator decided the agent should be paid for eliminating a 2004 option that allowed the outfielder to become a free agent.

The finding was disclosed to the Associated Press by a person familiar with the case who spoke on condition of anonymity because player-agent disputes are supposed to remain confidential.

The Milwaukee Brewers said that Dale Sveum is no longer under consideration to become manager. Sveum was interim manager after Ned Yost was fired with 12 games left in the regular season. Also, Doug Melvin will get a three-year contract extension as general manager of the Brewers.

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Delonte West contemplated quitting before leaving the team’s training camp to seek help for depression and “a mood disorder” he has been battling his entire life.

West said he removed himself from the team to “get my thoughts back together.” He missed three exhibition games during his absence from Oct. 4-15. West played 28 minutes in Cleveland’s loss to San Antonio on Thursday night.

Rain forced the cancellation of qualifying for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup event at Martinsville, Va. With the grid set by owner points, Jimmie Johnson will start from the pole.

Rodney Odom, 38; attended UCLA

Officials at UNC Charlotte say former 49ers starting center Rodney Odom, 38, has died.

Odom, who lived in Kingwood, Texas, was a transfer from UCLA and a three-year starter at Charlotte. He helped the 49ers reach the NCAA tournament in 1992 and the National Invitation Tournament in 1994.
