Hollywood honors (what else?) itself

It’s getting to the point where there is such a plethora of film festivals in Los Angeles that if you miss one, another will be on the horizon in a nanosecond. And this week is no exception.

The 12th Annual Hollywood Film Festival is ensconced at the ArcLight in Hollywood, culminating with a star-studded Hollywood Awards Gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Monday. The festival features screenings, seminars, competition and a presentation of “Genre Festival.” New to the mix this year is a Hollywood Horror, Sci-Fi & Fantasy Film Festival in conjunction with Film Threat. www.hollywood filmfestival.com.

Arab Film Festival

Celebrating its 12th year as a Bay Area-based film festival, the Arab Film Festival visits Beverly Hills for its second year at the Writers Guild Theater. The event, through Sunday, features 20 narrative, documentary and short films providing “realistic perspectives on Arab politics and people.” The festival will also present filmmaking/industry panels, as well as a program at USC on filmmaking in Iraq. www.aff .org.

Jules Verne Festival

Adventure is the hallmark of the Jules Verne Festival running Friday through Sunday at the Edison and ImaginAsian Center in downtown L.A. The opening night program celebrates the 80th birthday of Mickey Mouse and the presentation of the Jules Verne Nature Award to producer Roy E. Disney. Other highlights include screenings of the science-fiction classics “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and “Forbidden Planet” and a tribute to producer Ron Moore and the television series “Battlestar Galactica.” www.julesverne festival.com.

The San Fernando Valley International Film Festival offers free screenings Friday through Sunday of documentaries, shorts, student films, music videos and TV commercials at the Beverly Garland Hotel in North Hollywood. www.viffi.org.

he Los Angeles County Museum of Art continues its spotlight on Hungarian director Miklos Jansco with a screening Saturday of “The Red and the White” and “Red Palm.” www.lacma.org.

he Art Director Society pays tribute to the Disney Studios art department and their films with a screening Sunday at the Aero Theatre of the 1959 classic fantasy “Darby O’Gill and the Little People,” which stars a pre-James Bond -- and unibrowed -- Sean Connery. www.aerotheatre.com.
