Re “The twiddle of green thumbs,” April 13

Santa Monica may have the longest waiting lists, but gardening communities across Los Angeles are enjoying a building boom. The Los Angeles Community Garden Council typically fosters two new gardens annually. In 2008, we built three; in 2009, we have four under construction with two more in the pipeline. Community gardens are mostly self-run volunteer groups. Most lack the funds, manpower and real estate to expand the number of gardeners they serve. Although public interest is great, frustration could follow if we’re not able to access more acreage to accommodate demand.

The Garden Council plans to roll out a program to match landowners with gardeners in northeast Los Angeles. Information will soon be available online.
