Pet Airways lets the fur fly

Will Fido be OK flying solo? Pet Airways will be the first pets-only airline to take to the skies with service in Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C., starting in July. The website ZooToo ( www.zootoo.com) notes that pets will get plenty of attention in climate-controlled turboprop airplanes -- and even be eligible for lounge service before boarding. One-way introductory flights from L.A. to Chicago, or New York to L.A. cost $149, according to the company’s website. Tip: Pet Airways encourages folks seeking reservations to go to the website, check schedules and then send an e-mail to reservations@petairways.com. Info: www.petairways.com

Vegas plunge

With the temperature rising, the beautiful people -- and the rest of us -- are returning to the swimming pools at Las Vegas’ resorts. May 1 is traditionally the date when many pools begin daily operations. It’s also when the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s Beach Club launches its Friday Night Live concert series where guests can play blackjack at swim-up tables. Several hotels, including Caesars Palace and Wynn, offer European-style pools, where women are welcome to go topless.

Hiker honored

Norman Clyde, the legendary Sierra climber of the 1920s and ‘30s, was known for his heavy pack (usually about 80 pounds), his rugged resilience and his first ascents of hundreds of peaks. Now the Eastern California Museum in Independence, Calif., pays tribute to Clyde in a special exhibit of more than 50 photographs -- some taken of Clyde, others taken by him -- about the climber dubbed “the pack that walks like a man.” The exhibit runs through the end of the year at the museum at 155 N. Grant St. Info: (760) 878-0258, www.inyocounty.us/ecmuseum.
