In his book review of “$20 Per Gallon” (“Soon, Pain Far Beyond the Pump,” July 26), Matthew DeBord doesn’t mention one problem with continued addiction to oil and the anticipated rise of the cost of gasoline: namely, war.

As writer Kurt Lesser says, “The next time you hear a motorist complaining of being soaked, mention the enormous sums in support that are handed to the industry by all taxpayers -- where everyone pays for the privileged choice of the driver, directly and indirectly -- and that includes paying with lives in fighting the wars for cheap oil.”

Wars that will be even more likely in the years ahead with the increase in expense for the stuff.
