Re “Eunice Kennedy Shriver: 1921-2009; Tireless advocate for mentally disabled,” Obituary, Aug. 12

As the parent of a special-needs adult, I am particularly grateful to Eunice Kennedy Shriver for her courage and imagination. By providing a platform for those with special needs and their families -- and the opportunity to feel “normal” for a moment, a day, a race or a swim -- her effort to create the Special Olympics is inestimable. Thousands of families just like mine have been able to proudly cheer on their child as he or she strives to compete.

Indeed, my developmentally challenged son’s efforts and success far outweigh his siblings’ many athletic and academic achievements. Thanks, Mrs. Shriver, for letting the challenged compete -- regardless of their abilities.
