Querrey beats Roddick at Cincinnati Masters

Sam Querrey matched Andy Roddick shot for shot and made the biggest ones during a pair of tiebreakers Wednesday night, setting up a 7-6 (11), 7-6 (3) victory at the Cincinnati Masters in Mason, Ohio.

Playing his first match of the tournament, Roddick blew a 5-2 lead in the first-set tiebreaker, then lost his cool in a back-and-forth second set on a humid night that left both players dripping sweat all over the court. He slammed his racket after getting broken in the second set.

The top four seeded players -- Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic -- won their opening matches in straight sets earlier Wednesday.

Dinara Safina fell, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, to Aravane Rezai in a second-round match at the Rogers Cup in Toronto. Safina’s loss comes one day after third-seeded Venus Williams was upset by Kateryna Bondarenko.

The tournament lost another high-seeded player when No. 8 Caroline Wozniacki fell, 7-5, 6-3, to Zheng Jie. Wozniacki was broken seven times and saved only one of four break points in the second set.

Taylor Dent will return to the U.S. Open for the first time since 2005 after receiving one of eight men’s wild cards. The 28-year-old from Newport Beach sat out two full seasons because of three back operations. He was ranked a career-high No. 21 in 2005, but is currently 202nd.

The year’s last Grand Slam tournament begins Aug. 31 in New York.

Venus and Serena Williams have found a new sport: pro football. The sisters will become the latest celebrities to own a stake in the Miami Dolphins, a person familiar with the deal said.

The Williamses live in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., about an hour’s drive from the Dolphins’ stadium.

Blackhawks’ Kane is indicted

Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane was indicted on misdemeanor assault and theft charges after he was accused of beating up a cab driver over a fare dispute.

A grand jury in Buffalo, N.Y., dismissed a more serious felony charge of second-degree robbery, Erie County District Attorney Frank Sedita III said.

Kane, 20, and his cousin, James Kane, 21, were arrested Aug. 9 after 62-year-old taxi driver Jan Radecki told police they attacked him when he said he didn’t have 20 cents in change for the fare.

New Mexico football Coach Mike Locksley has filed a defamation lawsuit against an Albuquerque lawyer, the latest round in a legal tug-of-war that is overshadowing preseason workouts.

Locksley filed suit Tuesday, one day after attorney Whitney Warner disclosed details of an age discrimination and sexual harassment complaint by her client, former football administrative assistant Sylvia Lopez.

Leroy Hill says he expects to hear from the NFL now that he has been charged in Georgia with misdemeanor marijuana possession stemming from a January traffic stop. The attorney for the Seattle Seahawks’ starting linebacker says the team can expect to lose Hill for some time during the season while he attends a trial.

New York Knicks guard Nate Robinson was arrested Tuesday for driving without a license. Police said Robinson was arrested after officers pulled him over in the Bronx at about 5:30 p.m. and discovered he had a suspended license.

Busch pulls out truck series win

Kyle Busch pulled away from Matt Crafton in the closing laps to easily win the O’Reilly 200 truck series race at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee.

Busch passed Jason White for the lead on Lap 124 and then steadily pulled away from Crafton after the race’s final caution period on Lap 175.

Mason’s Thunder stint is over

Free agent Desmond Mason will not be returning to the Oklahoma City Thunder next season. Mason’s agent, Roger Montgomery, said that talks between the nine-year NBA veteran and the Thunder had broken down and the two sides wouldn’t be agreeing on a new contract.

Paul “Duke” Hogue, a star center on Cincinnati’s national championship basketball teams in 1961 and 1962, has died at age 69 of heart and kidney failure, his wife said.
