David Ortiz’s second homer lifts Red Sox

at Boston 3, Chicago 2: David Ortiz hit his second home run of the game to end a ninth-inning tie. It was Ortiz’s 10th career game-ending home run and franchise-record ninth with the Red Sox. Hall of Fame member Jimmie Foxx had eight.

at Toronto 3, Tampa Bay 2: Marco Scutaro scored the winning run in the ninth inning on a wild pitch after closer J.P. Howell loaded the bases with three walks. Rod Barajas hit a tying pinch-hit home run against Howell (6-4) with one out in the inning.

at Seattle 5, Oakland 3: Jose Lopez hit a home run, Bill Hall drove in two runs and Luke French (4-3) won his third game in four decisions as a Mariner. Seattle won all three games in the series for its first series sweep since June 19-21, against Arizona.

Cleveland 4, at Kansas City 2: Grady Sizemore reached base four times and scored three runs and David Huff (8-7) gave up two runs and seven hits in six innings.

Baltimore 5, at Minnesota 1: Jeremy Guthrie (9-12) won his second start in a row to end the Twins’ winning streak at five games.
