A police officer shot and killed a knife-wielding robbery suspect during a late-night scuffle, police said Friday.
Two bicycle-riding officers responded to a call Thursday night at a Ralphs supermarket downtown and found several people attempting to detain suspects in a robbery that had just occurred at the store, police said.
Police used their batons but were unable to immediately arrest one of the suspects, who began waving a knife at officers and others. One officer, a three-year veteran, fired twice at the suspect from less than 5 feet away, according to police.
The suspect was pronounced dead at UC San Diego Medical Center shortly after midnight. A second suspect, identified as Joseph Kidis, 18, was arrested and a third fled.
