Washington is alone at the top

Jon Brockman scored on the first two possessions of overtime and finished with 21 points, and No. 21 Washington survived a wild finish to regulation and kept control of the Pacific 10 Conference race with a 73-70 victory Thursday night over No. 14 Arizona State in Seattle.

The Huskies, 21-7 overall and 12-4 in the Pac-10, moved 1 1/2 games clear of everyone else in the conference with only two league games remaining on their schedule, and snapped the Sun Devils’ five-game winning streak.

Brockman scored on the low block twice against Arizona State’s Jeff Pendergraph, who had four fouls, to start overtime.

Justin Dentmon, whose gaffe at the end of regulation helped the Sun Devils force overtime, added six free throws in the extra five minutes.

Pendergraph had 24 points and 13 rebounds for the Sun Devils (21-6, 10-5).

James Harden added 19 points for Arizona State, but only four after halftime. He fouled out in overtime.

Washington State 69, Arizona 53: Taylor Rochestie scored 17 points as the host Cougars (15-13, 7-9) handed the Wildcats (18-10, 8-7) a second straight loss. Klay Thompson added 16 points and Caleb Forrest 15 for Washington State.

Nic Wise scored 19 points for Arizona, which had beaten Washington State in 44 of the previous 47 games between the teams.

The Cougars opened the second half with a 21-6 run.
