Dunleavy gets technical for third straight game

Share

Maybe Mike Dunleavy should be referred to as Coach T for the immediate future.

T as in technical.

The Clippers coach has picked up technical fouls in the Clippers’ last three games -- at home on Sunday against Dallas, at Sacramento on Tuesday and on Wednesday in the first quarter against the 76ers. That’s three in a span of four days.

The latest one came with 1:09 remaining in the first quarter after an offensive foul was called on Mardy Collins.

“I’m trying to protect my players,” Dunleavy said. “I see something that I don’t think is right, and I go in at halftime and watch the video replay, and I feel that I have been right about those calls.”

Post-Christmas present

Fred Jones came to Los Angeles with very little baggage. Literally.

The free-agent guard came to the Clippers for a quick viewing and workout before signing a non-guaranteed contract and then played in his first game with his new team on Sunday.

He said he didn’t bring much in the way of clothes because he didn’t know if he would be staying long, not having any idea how the tryout might unfold. The staff was joking about getting him more Clippers gear. Life in a sweatsuit can get rather old, though.

Finally, more clothes arrived from his home in Portland, Ore. “I got a shipment in the mail,” he reported on Wednesday. “My wife took care of me.”

But his real gift, he said, was getting another NBA gig. “Oh, it’s a real blessing,” Jones said. “I was speechless.”

The Clippers were still talking about rookie guard Eric Gordon’s explosive drive and emphatic one-handed dunk in the second quarter against Sacramento.

“Oh man, he shocked me with that one,” said Al Thornton. “I knew he could dunk, but I didn’t know he could dunk like that.”

Injured rookie point guard Mike Taylor was watching from the comfort of home. The dunk was the showpiece of Gordon’s 24-point performance against the Kings.

“It was wonderful,” Taylor said, shaking his head. “It made me jump out of my chair. I hadn’t seen him jump like that since he was in Indiana.”
