Police needed in brawl

Boys’ basketball games scheduled for today involving Crenshaw and Fremont high schools have been postponed by City Section officials investigating a Wednesday afternoon brawl that included players from those schools.

The incident occurred late in a game at Crenshaw after a flagrant foul. A scuffle among players led to the game’s being halted, but the fight spread among some fans, prompting one police officer to use pepper spray to disperse the crowd, said Michael Bowman, deputy chief for the Los Angeles Unified School District police.

There were no arrests. One Fremont player suffered a cut to his shin.

Crenshaw was supposed to play Manual Arts today, with Fremont facing Jefferson.

“I can’t allow them to play a game at this point when I don’t know who needs to be suspended,” City administrator Trent Cornelius said.

Cornelius said Wednesday’s victory was awarded to Crenshaw by forfeit because game officials assessed a second technical against Fremont Coach Sam Sullivan “for not controlling players on the bench.”
