Moreno keeps WBA title

Anselmo Moreno of Panama has retained his World Boxing Assn. bantamweight title in Poitiers, France, with a split decision over Mahyar Monshipour of France.

Moreno (26-1-1) kept his composure Saturday as Monshipour pressured strongly between the eighth and 10th rounds. Two of the judges scored the bout 116-113 and 116-112 in favor of Moreno, while the third gave the fight to Monshipour, 115-113.

Moreno, whose only loss was in 2002, started strongly, catching Monshipour with a left hook in the first round and several sharp jabs in the second.

Alinghi will sail catamaran

Alinghi of Switzerland will sail a giant catamaran when it defends the oldest trophy in international sports early next year against bitter U.S. rival BMW Oracle Racing.

The Swiss confirmed they will sail a twin-hulled boat that is 90 feet long on the waterline. The cat reportedly has a bowsprit that makes it about 120 feet overall.

Alinghi and BMW Oracle Racing of San Francisco are scheduled to meet in a best-of-three series in February in massive multihulls.

U.S. beats Egypt in under-19 event

Ashton Gibbs scored 18 points to help the United States beat Egypt, 112-55, and complete a sweep of pool games at the FIBA under-19 world basketball championships in Auckland, New Zealand.

Shelvin Mack added 14 points and John Shurna had 13 points and six rebounds for the Americans, who finished ahead of France, Egypt and Iran in Group B of the 16-team tournament. Gordon Hayward had 10 points, six rebounds and five assists.

The U.S. led 33-11 after the first quarter and 62-24 at halftime. With the game out of reach, all 12 players saw court time in the second half.

The win followed a 106-55 victory over Iran and a 71-55 win over France and put the U.S. into the second round beginning Monday.

Kitwara wins Peachtree race

Sammy Kitwara of Kenya won the 40th Peachtree Road Race with a time of 27:21 in his debut in the annual 6.2-mile event through the streets of Atlanta.

Ridouane Harroufi of Morocco was second, and Ethiopia’s Gashu Ibrahim Jeilan third.

The top-seeded runner in the women’s field, Lineth Chepkurui of Kenya, won her first Peachtree race.

Fabrice Lapierre of Australia used a favorable wind to win the long jump at the Madrid Meet, in what was expected to be a duel between Olympic champion Irving Saladino and silver medalist Godfrey Khotso Mokoena.

Lapierre jumped a wind-aided 28 feet, 1 1/2 inches to beat Mokoena, who finished second with an African record of 27-10 3/4 .

Princeton and Brown rowers advanced to the final of the Temple Cup for student eights at the Henley Royal Regatta on the Thames in Henley, England.

Princeton beat Amsterdamsche Studenten Roeivereeniging Nereus of Holland by three-quarters of a length, and Brown beat Melbourne University of Australia by 2 1/4 lengths to set up today’s all-American final, the only one at this year’s regatta.
