Re “Lakers and L.A. will split cost of parade,” June 15, and “Several arrested as Lakers fans get rowdy,” June 15

Has the world gone crazy? Or more specifically, have politicians in L.A. gone crazy? I am as big a sports fan as anyone. But the city is cutting salaries and vital city services.

So let me get this right. We’ll throw a parade rather than pay a few more teachers for a year? We’ll fire people over a lack of money, and then we’ll help one of the most valuable sports franchises in the world -- with some of the most highly paid people in the country -- be cheered in the streets?

The city needs to distinguish between what is truly meaningful and what is merely a fun (albeit compelling) diversion.

After the shameful and disgusting melee that occurred following the Lakers’ victory, what official with any common sense would advocate a parade?

Whether funded with public or private money, the damage that is likely to occur could end up costing this cash-strapped city millions.

As a downtown resident, I would rather be inconvenienced by another annoying film shoot that will bring money to the city.

Why should the city shell out a million dollars more for fans? Special events at elementary and high schools are often canceled as punishment for collective and excessive bad behavior.

People are losing their jobs daily, public schools are suffering in unimaginable ways, social programs are being cut, and the city is now splitting the cost of a parade so the public can watch the Lakers roll down the street?
