Donte’ Stallworth suspended indefinitely by the NFL

Cleveland Browns receiver Donte’ Stallworth was indefinitely suspended by the NFL on Thursday for driving drunk and killing a pedestrian in Miami.

Stallworth, who will not be paid during the suspension, pleaded guilty this month to a DUI manslaughter charge for striking Mario Reyes on March 14.

He began serving a 30-day jail sentence Tuesday and has reached a financial settlement with the family of the 59-year-old construction worker.

Ferrer loses in grass tuneup

Ivan Navarro upset defending champion David Ferrer, 6-4, 6-2, in a match between Spaniards to reach the Ordina Open semifinals in Den Bosch, Netherlands. Dinara Safina also advanced in the grass-court tuneup for Wimbledon.

Virginie Razzano upset defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska, 7-6 (5), 7-5, to reach the semifinals of the Eastbourne Championships in Eastbourne, England.

In the men’s draw, Fabrice Santoro advanced when Ivan Ljubicic retired because of a left ankle injury.

HOCKEY

Ovechkin wins MVP again

Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin won the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP for the second straight year. Detroit Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk won the Selke Trophy as the league’s top defensive forward and the Lady Byng for gentlemanly play and skill.

Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas, who had a 2.10 goals-against average, won the Vezina Trophy for best goalie, and Zdeno Chara earned the Norris Trophy as top defenseman. The Bruins’ Claude Julien was given the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s top coach. Columbus goalie Steve Mason took the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. Kings defenseman Drew Doughty and Ducks forward Bobby Ryan were named to the all-rookie team.

COLLEGES

Minor damage for UCLA’s Gordon

An examination of UCLA forward Drew Gordon’s injured right knee showed only minor damage. Gordon suffered a partially torn patellar tendon at a USA Basketball event this week, but doctors say the injury will not require surgery.

The NCAA infractions committee intends to uphold sanctions against Florida State that would take away wins in 10 sports, including as many as 14 by football Coach Bobby Bowden. After a public records lawsuit and intervention by Florida’s attorney general, the NCAA allowed Florida State to release the committee’s June 2 response to FSU’s appeal of the NCAA punishment that would strip the school of the victories.

Police say a 20-year-old UCLA tennis player was in a coma after somebody punched him following a country music concert in Dallas. Jeffrey Fleming of Newport Beach was in a Dallas hospital, but his condition was not available.

Leaf expected to surrender today

Ryan Leaf’s attorney says the former NFL quarterback is back in West Texas and plans to surrender today on burglary and drug-related charges. Bill Kelly said he was in court all day Thursday and couldn’t get Leaf processed to face one count of burglary and eight drug-related counts associated with the painkiller Hydrocodone.

An Ohio prosecutor is opposing former Ohio State football star Maurice Clarett’s request for early release from prison to pursue an NFL career. Clarett says the sooner he can be released, the sooner he can make a comeback.

Formula One teams may split

Eight Formula One teams began preparations for a rival series after failing to resolve their dispute with motor sports’ governing body over financial constraints. Ferrari, which has participated since the first season in 1950, and current leader Brawn GP headed the list of Formula One Teams’ Assn. members to announce the split ahead of Sunday’s British Grand Prix.

Tour de France organizers banned former world champion Tom Boonen from next month’s race after the Belgian rider tested positive for cocaine for the second time in less than a year. . . . Lance Armstrong will be on Astana Cycling’s final nine-rider roster for the Tour.
