Surgery is still on table for Rodriguez

The New York Yankees haven’t made a final decision about how to treat Alex Rodriguez’s hip injury, General Manager Brian Cashman said after taking part in a two-hour conference call that included doctors, team officials, Rodriguez and agent Scott Boras.

“We’re not there yet to make a decision,” Cashman said Friday. “We’re making sure everybody understands the benefits and risks. It’s a pretty enormous task.”

Cashman said he was pretty confident surgery would eventually be needed. It could come after the season if the third baseman plays through the injury this year. Or it could be before the season opener. “The question is when,” the GM said.

“It comes down to Alex. What he feels is best,” Manager Joe Girardi said. “It’s a tough decision no matter what.”

Rodriguez did some light swinging and fielded grounders in Colorado where he is being examined, and afterward said he felt better.

The tests he underwent Friday were designed to determine strength and flexibility after a cyst in the hip was drained Wednesday.

A’s finalize deals

Infielder Nomar Garciaparra and shortstop Orlando Cabrera finalized one-year deals with the Oakland Athletics.

Cabrera got $4 million, and Garciaparra was guaranteed $1 million with the chance to make $250,000 each in performance and roster bonuses.

Garciaparra, 35, is expected to play a utility role. He played first base, third base and shortstop in three seasons with the Dodgers but was limited to 55 games last season because of injuries. He said he strongly considered retirement during the off-season.

Former Dodger Andruw Jones, a nonroster outfielder in Texas’ camp, went two for four in an 8-7 exhibition loss to Kansas City, shortly after going three for five with a home run in a “B” game against the Royals. . . . Atlanta’s Garret Anderson was held out of a game against Houston after pulling his right calf minutes before the first pitch. . . . Oakland pitcher Justin Duchscherer will rest his sore elbow until next week after a second medical opinion confirmed swelling in the area. . . . Philadelphia second baseman Chase Utley, recovering from off-season hip surgery, should play in his first exhibition in the next two weeks, the Phillies said. . . . A doctor’s exam of Washington right-hander Shawn Hill, scratched from his start Thursday because of forearm tightness, revealed no damage in his surgically repaired elbow.
