One overtime is enough for Syracuse

Coming off a six-overtime victory, Syracuse played just one extra period in a 74-69 victory over West Virginia on Friday night in the semifinals of the Big East tournament at New York.

Eric Devendorf had 23 points for Syracuse, and Jonny Flynn, who played 67 minutes in Thursday’s game, had 15 points and nine assists.

Louisville beat Villanova, 69-55, to reach the Big East tournament championship game for the first time.

Atlantic Coast

Tyler Hansbrough scored 28 points as No. 1 North Carolina held off Virginia Tech, 79-76, in the quarterfinals at Atlanta.

Maryland continued its run for an NCAA bid as Greivis Vasquez scored 22 points and the Terrapins advanced to the semifinals with a 75-64 upset of No. 9 Wake Forest.

Derwin Kitchen scored the go-ahead layup with seven seconds left as Florida State beat Georgia Tech, 64-62.

In today’s semifinals, Florida State plays North Carolina and Maryland faces Duke, which defeated Boston College, 66-65, as Gerald Henderson scored the go-ahead basket with 34 seconds remaining.

Big 12

LaceDarius Dunn made the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:12 remaining and Baylor ended a 24-game losing streak against Texas, advancing to the conference championship game for the first time with a 76-70 victory at Oklahoma City.

Missouri beat Oklahoma State, 67-59, in the other semifinal.

Big Ten

Michigan State kept its hopes for a top seeding in the NCAA tournament alive with a 64-56 victory over Minnesota in the quarterfinals at Indianapolis.

The Spartans next play Ohio State, which defeated Wisconsin, 61-57.

Mike Davis finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds, leading Illinois past Michigan, 60-50.

Robbie Hummel scored 20 points to lead Purdue past Penn State, 79-65, and into a semifinal game against Illinois.

Southeastern

Kentucky’s streak of 17 NCAA appearances is in serious jeopardy after a 67-58 loss to Louisiana State in the quarterfinals at Tampa, Fla. The Wildcats’ Jodie Meeks was held to eight points, the first time he has finished in single digits all season.

LSU will face Mississippi State, which defeated South Carolina, 82-68.

Tyler Smith scored 22 points to lead Tennessee to an 86-62 rout of Alabama. Tennessee will play Auburn, which defeated Florida, 61-58.

Mountain West

Lorrenzo Wade scored 16 of his 24 points after halftime and made two free throws with seven seconds left, carrying San Diego State to a 64-62 victory over No. 25 BYU in the semifinals at Las Vegas.

Elsewhere

Robert Dozier scored 16 points and Memphis became the first NCAA Division I program to win 30 games in four consecutive seasons by beating Houston, 74-49, in the semifinals of the Conference USA tournament at Memphis, Tenn. Tulsa beat Alabama Birmingham, 70-67, in the other semifinal. . . . Tyler Newbold made a 15-foot jump shot with three seconds left and top-seeded Utah State overcame a 13-point halftime deficit to defeat New Mexico State, 71-70, in the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament at Reno, Nev. . . . American is headed to the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row after defeating Holy Cross, 73-57, in the title game of the Patriot League tournament at Washington. . . . Omar Samhan scored a career-high 29 points and Patty Mills had 19 as St. Mary’s made its final case to the NCAA selection committee with an 85-65 home victory over Eastern Washington. The Gaels added this game to their schedule last week in an effort to provide one more chance to prove to the committee that Mills has recovered from a broken hand and the team is worthy of an at-large bid.
