Cutler a no-show, asks Broncos to trade him

Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler was a no-show on Monday for Coach Josh McDaniels’ first team meeting and the start of the Broncos’ off-season workouts, and if he gets his way, he’ll never step foot in the team’s training facility again.

“The Denver Broncos confirm that Jay Cutler has requested a trade,” team spokesman Jim Saccomano said Monday.

McDaniels declined interview requests after telling the Denver Post that he wanted to meet again with Cutler to try to resolve their differences before he considers a trade.

McDaniels briefly addressed his broiling quarterback controversy when he gathered his team as a group for the first time Monday morning.

“He just addressed it and said, ‘I’ll take care of it,’ ” recounted defensive lineman Kenny Peterson.

Cutler is upset that the Broncos tried to trade him last month for quarterback Matt Cassel, then with New England, and with what he considers McDaniels’ misleading answers to his inquiries about those discussions.

Running back Jason Wright and the Arizona Cardinals have agreed to a two-year contract. Terms were not disclosed.

The 5-foot-10, 215-pound free agent out of Diamond Bar High and Northwestern spent the last four seasons with the Cleveland Browns.

The Jacksonville Jaguars waived receiver Matt Jones, parting ways with the former first-round draft pick just days after his latest arrest.

Jones was jailed last week in Arkansas for violating a plea agreement that stemmed from a drug charge in 2008. The 6-6 Jones, a former star quarterback at Arkansas, is awaiting an April 13 court appearance.

Top recruit will play at Tennessee

Standout high school running back Bryce Brown has signed a letter of intent with Tennessee. The nation’s top-ranked recruit announced his decision from the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in Wichita.

Florida State will appeal the part of an NCAA sanction that would take away wins in 10 sports, including as many as 14 in football.

Trustees chairman Jim Smith says the board is 100% behind the decision. “It’s certainly unfair to Coach [Bobby] Bowden,” Smith said. “It was a breakdown in academics, a breakdown that none of us condone.”

Nevada running back Luke Lippincott has been granted a sixth year of eligibility because of a knee injury that forced him to miss most of last season.

Tarpley settles suit with NBA

Former NBA player Roy Tarpley settled a federal lawsuit against the NBA and the Dallas Mavericks in which he claimed the league and the team violated the Americans with Disabilities Act by refusing to reinstate him after a ban for drug use.

The lawsuit was settled on Jan. 22, according to a filing signed by U.S. District Judge Kenneth Hoyt. Terms of the settlement could not be immediately determined.

Former Wisconsin running back P.J. Hill has been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and leading police on a chase at Madison, Wis.

Hill is the third-leading rusher in Wisconsin history and is eligible for the NFL draft.

Sweden’s Therese Alshammar broke her own 50-meter butterfly world record at the Australian swimming trials in Sydney. Alshammar swam a time of 25.44 seconds in the qualifying heats to take 0.02 seconds off the record of 25.46 she set on June 13, 2007. . . . Jo Jackson set a world record in the 400-meter freestyle at the British swimming championships in Sheffield, England. She finished in 4 minutes 0.66 seconds, lowering Federica Pellegrini’s mark by almost a second.

Lance Mackey continues to lead the 1,100-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, being the first to reach Shaktoolik, Alaska. Closest behind Mackey are Canadian musher Sebastian Schnuelle and four-time winner Jeff King.

Arena Football League players and management reached agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement, paving the way for the league to restart play next year. Both the players’ union and the league’s board must ratify the deal, which would cover four seasons from 2010 through 2013.

Dave Leitao resigned as Virginia’s men’s basketball coach. Virginia finished 10-18 this season, 11th in the Atlantic Coast Conference. It was the Cavaliers’ worst record since they went 9-17 in 1967-68.
