Anthony scores 42 in shootout victory
Carmelo Anthony extended his torrid start with 42 points in the Denver Nuggets’ 133-123 shootout win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday night.
The Nuggets are 3-0 thanks to Anthony, whose game has only gotten better since the spring, when he led Denver to the Western Conference finals, where they lost to the champion Lakers in six games.
O.J. Mayo scored a career-high 40 points for Memphis.
Chauncey Billups chipped in 22 points and 12 assists, and Kenyon Martin had 16 points and Nene 18. All of the Grizzlies’ starters scored in double figures. Marc Gasol had 20 points.
But this was the ‘Melo vs. Mayo Show, and the sixth-year veteran outlasted the second-year pro.
The game included 66 free throws, 37 of them by Denver.
