Cable talks to Davis; job status not a topic

Coach Tom Cable said Wednesday that he has spoken with Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis about allegations that Cable has a history of violent behavior toward women.

“What we talked about is between us and we’ll keep it that way,” he said.

Cable said the conversation came within the last two days and that his job status was not discussed. Cable said he planned to coach the team for the rest of the season.

The Raiders are undergoing a “serious evaluation” of allegations made to ESPN by Cable’s first wife, Sandy Cable, and former girlfriend, Marie Lutz, that the coach physically abused them at various times during their relationships.

The unbeaten Indianapolis Colts have lost starting linebacker Tyjuan Hagler for the rest of the season because of a ruptured biceps. . . . Former UCLA standout Jarrad Page, a three-year starter at free safety for the Kansas City Chiefs, will sit out the rest of the season because of a calf injury.

Padilla’s accident was at a gun range

The accident that forced Dodgers pitcher Vicente Padilla to go to a hospital in his native Nicaragua on Tuesday took place at a shooting range, a representative for the Nicaraguan national police said. Padilla was released from the hospital the same day.

His right leg was grazed by a bullet when his bodyguard attempted to fix Padilla’s gun and accidentally set it off, the representative, Vilma Reyes, said. Padilla’s agent, Adam Katz, had said his client was hurt in a hunting accident.

Lieberman gets D-League job

Nancy Lieberman is set to become the first female head coach of an NBA Development League team.

A news conference is scheduled today to introduce Lieberman as the first coach of the team that will begin play during the 2010-11 season in Frisco, a suburb about half an hour north of downtown Dallas.

North Carolina women’s coach Sylvia Hatchell says Jessica Breland’s Hodgkin’s lymphoma has gone into remission, though it’s still unclear whether the senior will be able to play this season.

Liverpool’s hopes suffer a big hit

Liverpool’s chances of progressing in the Champions League took a big hit when the five-time European champions conceded late to draw 1-1 at Lyon, which advanced to the next round.

With Arsenal moving to the verge of qualification with a 4-1 win over AZ Alkmaar, Liverpool is in severe danger of becoming the first English club to fall at the group stage since Manchester United in 2005.

Also, Sevilla advanced to the knockout stage after its 1-1 draw at Stuttgart and Inter Milan scored twice in the last four minutes to revitalize its chances with a 2-1 win at Dynamo Kiev.

Toyota pulls out of Formula One

Toyota is pulling out of Formula One racing, the world’s largest automaker announcing that it needs to cut costs and focus on its core business.

Toyota follows Honda Motor Co. as the second major Japanese automaker to withdraw from the sport in the last 11 months. Honda pulled out last December amid worsening economic conditions. Brawn GP, which took over the old Honda team, won the 2009 F1 championship.
