Thieves flee on Gold Line

Scarcely two days after its debut, the new Eastside leg of Los Angeles’ rail system has already been used for more than commuting.

On Monday night, it was broken in as a getaway vehicle.

Authorities are looking for more information about two robbers who swiped a cellphone and used the new train line to escape from Little Tokyo.

After snatching a woman’s cellphone from an outside table at the Green Bamboo restaurant at Central Avenue and 2nd Street about 10:15 p.m. Monday, two men fled toward the Little Tokyo/Arts District Station, said Los Angeles Police Det. Al Rasch.

The suspects boarded a train bound for Union Station, said the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which patrols Metro stations.

The six-mile extension to the Gold Line, which runs from downtown to East Los Angeles, opened Sunday to much fanfare, offering a new option for those dependent on public transit -- even thieves, apparently.
