Teammates aided stabbing victim

A man will be arrested in the stabbing death of a University of Connecticut football player, his lawyer said Monday night, as police continued to sort out what happened during a fight outside a school-sponsored dance over the weekend.

Attorney Deron Freeman declined to identify his client, but says the man and several others got into a fight “with about six” Connecticut football players early Sunday. Freeman says his client did not stab Jasper Howard, but was present when Howard was mortally wounded.

Freeman said police searched his client’s home in Bloomfield and removed some items. Freeman said police told him that his client and others would be arrested.

It would be the second arrest connected to the stabbing, which occurred hours after Howard starred in Connecticut’s 38-25 homecoming victory over Louisville.

Johnny Hood, 21, of Hartford, was arraigned Monday on charges of interfering with an officer and breach of peace, but he has not been charged in Howard’s death.

Authorities said Hood gave a false name when he was questioned.

Call in question

The Southeastern Conference says there’s no video evidence to support the personal foul call against Arkansas’ Malcolm Sheppard in the fourth quarter of the Razorbacks’ 23-20 loss to Florida on Saturday.

The penalty gave the Gators the ball on the Arkansas 10-yard line, and they scored on the next play to tie the score at 20.

Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Sam Bradford has been ruled out of No. 25 Oklahoma’s game this week at No. 24 Kansas, but Coach Bob Stoops says any decision beyond that is yet to come. Bradford reinjured his right shoulder Saturday against Texas. . . . Tony Pike was back at practice Monday with a cast on his left forearm, an indication that No. 5 Cincinnati may not be without its starting quarterback for long. Pike was hurt late in a game Thursday against South Florida.
