NBA, referees agree to terms

The NBA and its referees union reached agreement on a two-year contract, ending a lockout of more than a month and saving the league from using replacements when the season starts.

The officials ratified the deal that was reached this week in a vote Friday night. No details of the vote were provided, nor were terms of the agreement.

“We are pleased to reach this agreement,” NBA Commissioner David Stern said in a statement. “The negotiations extended further than either side had hoped, but when our regular season tips off on Tuesday we’ll have the best referees in the world officiating our games.”

The referees union did not comment.

The referees will begin a three-day training camp today and be ready Tuesday. The league had been using replacement officials during exhibition play.

The contract between the league and the National Basketball Referees Assn. expired Sept. 1, and the league announced it was locking out the officials on Sept. 18, saying they had rejected its final contract offer.

Antawn Jamison’s ailing shoulder will keep him off the court well into the regular season.

The Washington Wizards announced an estimated recovery time for Jamison’s injury, saying he’s likely to miss the first eight to 13 games.

The two-time All-Star forward partially dislocated his shoulder trying to block a shot in an exhibition game against Cleveland on Oct. 14.

The Utah Jazz says forward Kyle Korver will have surgery on his left knee Tuesday and will miss the beginning of the regular season.

Korver has been bothered by inflammation in his left knee. He has appeared in only one exhibition game.

The Oklahoma City Thunder has exercised fourth-year contract options on Kevin Durant and Jeff Green. Thunder General Manager Sam Presti said the team also exercised third-year options on guard Russell Westbrook and forward D.J. White. With the team exercising its option on the players, all four are now under contract with the Thunder through 2010-11.

Soderling reaches Stockholm semifinal

Top-seeded Robin Soderling edged Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 7-6 (4), 6-4, in the Stockholm Open quarterfinals, remaining on course for a third home final in the Swedish capital.

Soderling, the only seeded player to reach the last eight, will play Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus in one semifinal today.

Baghdatis ousted French qualifier Arnaud Clement, 6-4, 6-4.

Olivier Rochus of Belgium will meet Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil in the other semifinal.

Yanina Wickmayer defeated Kirsten Flipkens, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-1, to reach the semifinals of the Luxembourg Open.

She will play Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland, who beat Katarina Srebotnik, 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-4.

Shahar Peer of Israel upset fourth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova, 6-2, 7-6 (4). She’ll face Sabine Lisicki, who ousted Patty Schnyder, 6-4, 6-2.

GOLF

Fowler, Owen share lead in Arizona

Twenty-year-old Rickie Fowler, in his second PGA Tour event since turning pro, shared the lead with Englishman Greg Owen halfway through the Frys.com Open at Scottsdale, Ariz.

Both shot six-under-par 64s in the second round in ideal conditions on the Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club to reach 11-under 129.

Champions Tour rookies Keith Clearwater and Russ Cochran shot five-under 66s to share the first-round lead in the AT&T; Championship at San Antonio.

MOTOR RACING

Newman wins pole at Martinsville

Ryan Newman won the pole for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville, Va.

Newman turned in a lap of 96.575 mph, followed by Jeff Gordon at 96.519.

Jimmie Johnson, the series points leader, qualified 15th.
