Kim in semifinals at match-play event

Anthony Kim advanced to the Volvo World Match Play Championship semifinals Friday despite losing to Scott Strange by three holes in his final-round match at Finca Cortesin in Casares, Spain.

Strange needed to beat Kim by at least four holes to advance and was 4-up going to the par-five 18th, but Kim took the hole after hitting his second shot to within four feet. Strange put his third shot into a bunker before conceding the hole.

Kim will face undefeated Robert Allenby in the semifinals. Allenby beat Oliver Wilson by three holes. Angel Cabrera will face Ross Fisher in the other semifinal.

John Cook shot a tournament-record 10-under-par 62 to take a three-stroke lead over Tom Watson and Phil Blackmar after the second round of the Champions Tour’s season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Sonoma, Calif. . . . PGA Tour officials postponed the Viking Classic at Madison, Miss., until at least Sunday and will evaluate the course today before making a decision on when or if the Fall Series tournament will be held.

Allmendinger had to take breath test

NASCAR driver A.J. Allmendinger was required to take a breath test before Friday’s practice at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway after his arrest on a drunk-driving charge.

Also, Allmendinger’s team, Richard Petty Motorsports, fined him $10,000, which will be donated to charity. The team also put him on probation through the end of next season.

Kentucky’s Wall cleared to play

Kentucky point guard John Wall has been cleared to play by the NCAA. The school announced that the 6-foot-4 freshman must sit out two games and repay almost $800 in expenses incurred during unofficial visits to schools during his junior year at Word of God Christian Academy.

The NCAA has benched West Virginia freshman forward Deniz Kilicli for the first 20 games of the season after determining he violated an amateurism rule.

Agassi used meth for ‘a year or so’

Andre Agassi used crystal meth periodically for “a year or so,” the eight-time Grand Slam champion revealed in an interview with People magazine.

New excerpts from Agassi’s autobiography reveal that Agassi wore a hairpiece that nearly fell off at the 1990 French Open and became jealous during ex-wife Brooke Shields’ appearance on “Friends,” and that Shields put a photo of Steffi Graf -- now married to Agassi -- on the refrigerator for motivation to get in better shape before their wedding.

The Williams sisters reached the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Championships at Doha, Qatar, along with Jelena Jankovic and Caroline Wozniacki. Venus Williams lost her first two group matches but advanced on sets thanks to Svetlana Kuznetsova’s 6-3, 6-2 win over Elena Dementieva. Unbeaten Serena Williams had already clinched her spot and will play Wozniacki in one semifinal today. Venus will face Jankovic.

Injured jockey in critical condition

Jockey Julia Brimo was hospitalized in critical condition following a spill at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky.

Brimo, 33, was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.

Former Lakewood High running back Jerry Stone will be tried as an adult on two counts of attempted murder and two counts of assault with a firearm in connection with a drive-by shooting in August in which no one was injured. If convicted on all counts, Stone, 17, could face life in prison.
