Coldwater Canyon reopens to traffic
A heavily traveled stretch of Coldwater Canyon Avenue in Studio City that was closed for a week because of a ruptured water pipe reopened Saturday night, according to officials with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
The stretch is part of a route connecting the San Fernando Valley and the Westside. The road was closed for roughly half a mile between Halkirk and Moorpark streets after a 62-inch-diameter, 95-year-old water trunk line ruptured Sept. 5.
Water gushed as high as 10 to 15 feet in the air, witnesses said. Some residences were flooded and cars washed away in a powerful torrent.
There was major damage to the street and water stood as deep as 3 feet in some areas.
The steel pipe did not deliver water directly to customers, but instead moved water between two reservoirs. It had been scheduled for replacement, DWP officials said.
DWP spokeswoman Kim Hughes said the road opened at 8 p.m. Saturday.
A second water pipe about two miles away in Valley Village broke less than 72 hours later and created a sinkhole that nearly consumed a firetruck.
