Serena’s cheap shot

A $10,000 fine? Serena Williams pocketed $500,000 at the U.S. Open. Ten grand is five bucks to her. For her menacing actions and foul mouth (don’t you wish your 8-year-old daughter was sitting nearby?) she should have been suspended instantly, and the ladies’ doubles championship should never have been played.

But, no! Think of what that would have meant to the organizers and, oh my gosh, TV! Teachers, factory workers and friends of yours are losing jobs and houses, and we turn our heads so the game can go on.

Pathetic.

I enjoyed watching Serena Williams’ heartfelt apology, which she issued two days after her meltdown at the U.S. Open.

You couldn’t even see the strings attached to her body, nor her accountant’s lips move.

Serena, don’t insult tennis fans by describing disgraceful behavior as “the passion I have for my job,” as you did in your post-match statement. You don’t have a job, you have a gift.

You’re a professional tennis player and as such you’re privileged. Even after apologizing to that lineswoman, you need to get some help (the kind John McEnroe never got).

If I hear one more sanctimonious sports fan and/or commentator rag on Serena Williams as if she is supposed to be the reincarnation of Mother Teresa, I’m going to lose it. Look, she’s not the first competitive athlete to fly off the handle in the heat of battle and she won’t be the last.

Yeah, tennis is not football, but when the adrenaline is pumping, tempers fly and things get said. Big deal. Enough already!
