Criticism abounds after Redskins’ loss

The Washington Redskins’ loss to the Detroit Lions, ending the Lions’ 19-game losing streak, opened the floodgates of media criticism in and around D.C.

The Washington Post’s Mike Wise, in a column headlined “A Debacle From Top To Bottom,” called the Redskins’ performance a “dumpster fire -- this abomination of a loss.” Post blogger Dan Steinberg called the defeat the worst sports moment of the year in D.C., which is saying something in the home of the Nationals.

Steinberg wrote: “Redskins lose to the NFL’s worst team, ending the Lions’ 19-game losing streak. Coming on the heels of the home booing, the Twitter meltdown, the Sonny [Jurgensen]-[Jim] Zorn battle, the players questioning the loyalty of D.C. fans and media members and the Burgundy Revolution taking its first halting steps, this sets us up for the most miserable week of D.C. sports talk radio in this century.”

Worst uniform ever?

Clothes make the man, Mark Twain said, which possibly explains Oregon’s rousing victory over California last Saturday. Ditching their usual hideous uniforms for 1994 throwbacks, the Ducks routed the Golden Bears, 42-3.

A day later, the Seattle Seahawks donned neon green jerseys, which were painful to look at, and blew a 10-point lead in a 25-19 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Wrote “Late Show” writer Eric Stangel in a Twitter feed: “NFL: Seriously, can’t you already picture the Seahawks green jerseys in the outlet mall discount bin?”

No helmets in this sport

Herschel Walker, who once tried his hand in bobsled racing, is stepping out again, recently signing with Strikeforce to become a mixed martial arts competitor.

“I’ve been training for several years,” Walker, 47, said in a news release. “I would play college football games on Saturday and then compete in martial arts tournaments on Sunday after church. I’m now looking forward to opening up another chapter in my life and to competing in MMA.”

Strikeforce Chief Executive Scott Coker said he flew to Los Angeles recently to watch Walker and “was surprised to see his advanced wrestling and striking abilities. He’s got work ahead of him, but he’s committed to training at one of the most notable gyms in the sport of MMA (San Jose’s American Kickboxing Academy), so it will be interesting to watch him progress.”

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow had one question for Coach Urban Meyer after taking a brutal hit to the head against Kentucky that caused him to spend Saturday night in a hospital. “He asked me, ‘Did I hold on to the ball?’ ” Urban Meyer told the Associated Press. “I told him he did, and he winked at me and said, ‘It’s great to be a Gator.’ ”
