A look at Kings’ unrestricted and restricted free agents

The Kings now have to look toward next season, when change is sure to come. They have six players who are now unrestricted free agents and three more who are restricted. Some of these players may not be back. Here are the names, their 2009-10 salary, key stats and comments from The Times hockey Hall of Fame columnist Helene Elliott.

Unrestricted

Alexander Frolov, $4 million; 19 goals, 51 points. The talk is he wants a new deal for $5 million per season. Have fun in Russia in the Kontinental Hockey League, Fro.

Fredrik Modin,$3.5 million; 3 goals, 5 points in 20 games after trade from Columbus. Had moments when he was useful but not enough.

Raitis Ivanans,$600,000; 0 points, 136 penalty minutes. Played more games without scoring a point than anyone in the NHL. Can’t waste a roster spot on him anymore.

Jeff Halpern, $2 million; 2 assists in 16 games after trade from Tampa Bay. Brought in for experience but proved too slow and unproductive to have impact.

Randy Jones, $3 million; 5 goals, 21 points. Wasn’t the same after a December head/neck injury. Coach Terry Murray loves him, but Jones makes too many bad reads and bad decisions.

Sean O’Donnell, $1.25 million; 3 goals, 15 points. He was the conscience of the team and a good mentor to Drew Doughty and Jack Johnson, but too many games were too quick for him.

Restricted

Brad Richardson, $600,000; 11 goals, 16 assists. Kings were 11-0-1 when he scored. A useful “energy” player though he’s small and not physical enough to be an effective checker.

Scott Parse, $550,000; 11 goals, 24 points in 59 games. Murray loves to talk about Parse’s “highlight reel goals” but didn’t give him enough ice time for him to produce consistently.

Rich Clune, $562,000; 2 points, 26 penalty minutes in 14 games. Agitator who had to be cautioned to stop yapping during warmups in the playoffs. Brings a goofy energy.
