My Favorite Weekend: Shane Mosley

Welterweight boxing champ “Sugar” Shane Mosley has a date with destiny Saturday in Las Vegas against undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr., and the 38-year-old Pomona product says he’s done everything possible to give the HBO pay-per-view audience a night to remember.

“I’ve worked really hard to be the best I can possibly be, because I’m fighting for my legacy now,” says the veteran Mosley. “It’s more than just another fight for me. And I’ll be ready.”

He’ll also be ready for some R&R when it’s all over, and here’s how that might go.

I have a home in Las Vegas and my training facility is in Big Bear, but I still spend a lot of time in the Los Angeles area. I especially like Beverly Hills. I do a lot of shopping at the Beverly Center and along Rodeo Drive, places like Louis Vuitton and Gucci. But I really go there to people-watch. I think that’s why everybody goes there.

And I like to stay at the Thompson Hotel on Wilshire. They’ve got a great pool room/bar/meeting area on top of the hotel, and it’s the perfect place to talk and have fun.

For a good meal, I’ll go to Katana in West Hollywood. It’s not only got sushi, but they do a nice tender steak and I also like the chicken. A lot of times I’ll just have the chef send a lot of different skewers to the table. Katana has a kind of club atmosphere, and it’s another nice place to mingle.

I also like spending time at the Comedy Store. I love seeing all the comedians get up and do their thing. I could never imagine getting up there myself, that’s just something I’d never do, I just enjoy being in the audience. Sometimes a comedian will recognize me and give me a shout-out. I like Chris Tucker — I saw him once and he was really good.

When I’m in Big Bear, I’ll usually have breakfast at Grizzly Manor, and there’s a good lunch place down the street called Get the Burger. But where I really hang out is at the Bowling Barn. I’m in a league with some other locals, although they’re a little older than I am, mostly in their 50s or so. I also like snowboarding, and in the spring or summer I’ll get out the Sea-Doos.

I also play in a basketball league with celebrities at Crossroads in Santa Monica. I saw Jamie Foxx get dropped off the other day, but we didn’t play his team. Chris Brown is on my team. You’ll also see Morris Chestnut, Snoop, Ice Cube, a lot of people. I love basketball. I wanted to be a pro when I was young, but I knew I was going to be too short (5-foot-9) to do any real damage, so I went into boxing. But I remember even playing basketball at L.A. Fitness the day before I fought Oscar De La Hoya in 2000.
