UNDERRATED

The ‘Kids in the Hall’ comeback: For a certain brand of comedy nerd (like us), the return of the Canadian sketch troupe for an eight-episode miniseries on IFC is like when the Eagles reunited, except with better music. Called “Death Comes to Town,” the series finds all five original members — Mark, Bruce, Scott, Kevin and Dave — in multiple roles, revisiting some classic characters and devising new, equally twisted ones. Welcome back, Kids.

Mogwai: Thirteen years removed from its punishing debut, “Young Team,” we’re surprised how well this Scottish instrumental band still delivers the goods. Mogwai is a purveyor of a surprisingly dynamic mix of loud-quiet-loud guitar excursions, and its live shows can have the relentless drive of a low-lying storm system. A new album and DVD set, “Special Moves,” captures that taut chaos. Evocative and atmospheric, it’s amazing that a sound so big fits on plastic.

The Internet’s influence: For something that affects our life and leisure in so many ways, the online world still can’t entirely break a band or open a movie. The music website Pitchfork may have given Arcade Fire an early boost, but most of its favorites (hello, Wavves) never escape the blogosphere’s echo-chamber. And despite many online raves, “Scott Pilgrim” was crushed by “The Expendables” at the box office. Is the Web still worldwide these days?

The new generation of roasts: Back when the original Friars Club roasts aired, it felt like peering behind the showbiz curtain, watching comedy giants get tanked and take off the gloves. Now, in an age where working blue is as simple as switching channels, Comedy Central’s roasts offer few laughs and fewer shocks, other than continued employment for a few comics who may exist only at their tapings. Turn off the heat, the roast is done.
