Special to The Los Angeles Times

With surcharges for flight services that used to be free, the friendly skies have grown more inhospitable. But for travelers flying to the Squaw Valley USA ski resort near Lake Tahoe, which has just logged record snow, the journey ends on a generous note, with a free afternoon lift ticket.

The deal: Skiers and snowboarders need only present photo identification along with a same-day boarding pass, a printed itinerary or a baggage claim check from any airline to receive the afternoon lift ticket. The lift ticket is good from 1 p.m. to closing. The ticket normally costs $64 per adult, or $67 during holiday periods.

Several airlines schedule morning flights for the short hop from LAX to Reno, making it possible to glide down Squaw Valley’s slopes by the afternoon.

Tested: Guests should stop by the special ticket office near the cable car at the base of the resort to get the lift-ticket deal. A telephone representative confirmed the offer.
