Rangers have deal with Brandon Webb

Share

Free-agent pitcher Brandon Webb has agreed to a one-year contract with the Texas Rangers, pending a physical, according to an official with another club that had interest in Webb, ESPN.com reported Sunday. The Rangers had stepped up their interest in the 31-year-old right-hander after losing Cliff Lee to the Philadelphia Phillies two weeks ago.

From 2006 to 2008, while pitching for Arizona, Webb won one Cy Young Award and was the runner-up twice. He has pitched only four innings over the last two seasons because of shoulder problems.

The Rangers were one of four teams pursuing Webb aggressively this month, along with the Chicago Cubs, Washington Nationals and a National League Central “mystery team” that was widely thought to be the Cincinnati Reds.

Ravens’ Kindle is arrested

Baltimore Ravens rookie linebacker Sergio Kindle was arrested on drunk-driving charges.

Court records show that Kindle, 23, was pulled over shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday in the Jessup, Md., area. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding and related offenses.

Kindle, a second-round draft pick, has not played for the Ravens this season. The former University of Texas star fractured his skull after falling down two flights of stairs in late July at a friend’s house in Austin, Texas. New Mexico State Police said the 18-year-old daughter of former NHL center Pierre Turgeon was killed when the pickup truck she was driving crashed into a tractor-trailer at an intersection.

Police said Elizabeth Turgeon of Cherry Hill Village, Colo., died at the scene about 100 miles east of Albuquerque early Thursday. Lt. Eric Garcia confirmed Sunday that the teenager was the former NHL player’s daughter.

A passenger in the pickup was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Turgeon’s father played 19 seasons with Buffalo, the New York Islanders, Montreal, St. Louis, Dallas and Colorado, scoring 515 goals with 812 assists in 1,294 games.

Manchester United consolidated its lead in the Premier League by beating Sunderland, 2-0, thanks to two goals by Dimitar Berbatov, and Carlos Tevez’s two goals helped Manchester City move provisionally second with a 3-1 win at Newcastle.

Two games — Blackpool-Liverpool and Everton-Birmingham — were postponed because of the freezing conditions sweeping through Britain.
